Haughton Roof Cleaning
Dark stripes down the shingles and green fuzz in the pine shade both come off without a pressure wand. We treat Haughton roofs at low pressure so the granules stay put and your shingle warranty stays intact. Call (318) 401-2772 and we will take a look at yours.
What Is Actually Growing on Your Haughton Shingles
The dark vertical stripes homeowners see running down a Haughton roof get blamed on dirt, on soot, on age. None of that is right. The stripes are living colonies of Gloeocapsa magma, a cyanobacteria that eats the crushed limestone mixed into modern asphalt shingles. It needs warmth and it needs damp, and Bossier Parish supplies both from March straight through October.
Moss is a different tenant with a different appetite. Where the pine canopy over a Haughton lot keeps a slope shaded and slow to dry, moss builds a spongy green mat in the valleys, behind the chimney, and along the courses where needles pile up. That mat holds water against the shingle for days after a storm, and water sitting on asphalt is what curls edges and rots decking underneath. Lichen is the third one, a crusty gray-green patch fused to the granule surface, and it is the most stubborn of the three.
All three do damage a homeowner cannot see from the driveway. A shingle is built to bounce sunlight back off the house, and once a black colony spreads across it, that same shingle starts soaking heat in instead. The growth creeps outward season by season, so a slope showing two faint stripes this spring will show a stained face in a few years. We tell Haughton folks the honest version: this is a biological problem, and killing the organism is the only thing that fixes it for long. Scrubbing or blasting knocks the visible layer off and leaves the roots behind.
Why a Pressure Wand Costs You a Warranty
There is a reason no shingle manufacturer will tell you to point a pressure washer at a roof. Those colored ceramic granules are held to the asphalt mat by nothing more than the tack of the asphalt itself. High-pressure water strips them off by the handful, and once they wash into the gutter they are gone for good.
What is left behind is bare asphalt with nothing between it and the Louisiana sun. It dries out, it goes brittle, and it starts cracking years ahead of schedule. Read the warranty paperwork that came with a new Haughton roof and you will find language about improper maintenance voiding coverage. A granule-stripped slope is exactly the condition an adjuster points at when a claim gets denied, and the homeowner is usually the last one to know the wand did it.
High pressure also drives water sideways, up under the shingle courses and past the flashing where nothing is sealed against it. We have walked plenty of roofs a previous crew got aggressive with, and the pattern is easy to read: scoured lanes where the wand ran, granule drifts in the downspouts, and streaks already returning because the colonies were never killed. So we do not own a nozzle that touches a Haughton roof. No turbo tip, no surface cleaner, no rotating head. Anyone quoting you a roof job who leads with how much pressure their machine puts out is telling you something important about how your shingles will come out of it, and the same goes for your siding.
The Soft-Wash Method, Start to Finish
Soft washing means the cleaning agent does the work and the water only carries it. We mix a sodium hypochlorite solution with a surfactant and apply it below 100 PSI, roughly what comes out of a garden hose held to the thumb. The hypochlorite kills the Gloeocapsa, the moss, and the lichen down to the root, and the surfactant is what makes the mix cling to a sloped surface instead of sheeting into the gutter before it can work.
Before any of that leaves the tank, we take care of what sits under the eaves. Beds get soaked with plain water first so anything that runs off arrives already watered down, and the azaleas and shrubs so many Haughton homes keep tight against the foundation get tarped or given a dedicated rinse line. Downspouts get watched the whole time, and we flush the gutters at the end so the dead growth coming off the slope does not settle in the troughs and clog them.
We concentrate the mix to match what is on your shingles. A light north-face streak takes a gentler blend than a slope carrying thick pine-shade moss and lichen crust, and heavy growth sometimes wants a second pass rather than a stronger dose.
Most of the treatment happens from the ground and from ladders with reach poles, because every footstep on hot asphalt scuffs granules loose and a Louisiana summer shingle is softer than people expect. When a cut-up or steep Haughton roof genuinely has to be walked, we do it early while the shingles are still cool and we keep it short. You get photos of the stained slopes before we start and the same slopes after.
Pine Shade, Metal Roofs, and New Construction
The pine canopy that makes so many Haughton lots pleasant to live on is hard on the roof above it. Needles drop year round and gather in valleys and along the low edge of every slope, where they hold damp like a sponge and give moss somewhere to root. Sap and pollen come down with them and glue the mat together. On a lot like that we clear the debris off the slope before any chemistry goes on, because treating a roof under a needle bed just treats the needle bed.
Plenty of the newer construction around Haughton went up with metal roofing, and metal wants a different hand entirely. Panels take a gentler detergent that lifts mildew film, pollen, and pine tannin without dulling or spotting the factory finish, and we rinse fastener lines downhill so water never gets pushed up under a seam or a screw head. The result is uniform, which matters on metal, where a streaky rinse shows from the street.
Newer subdivisions catch people off guard. A roof that went on five or six years ago looks fine from the curb, then the north face starts showing faint gray shadowing that turns into real stripes by year eight. Bossier Parish humidity does not wait for a roof to get old. Around the Eastgate subdivision and the neighborhoods near Haughton High School we see both ends of it in the same week: a new build getting its first cleaning and a shaded older house that has never had one. Both come with a plain-spoken read on your deck and gutters while we are on the property.
Insurance Letters, HOA Notices, and How Long It Lasts
A fair number of the calls we get from Haughton start with a letter. An insurance carrier ran an aerial photo of the property, saw a dark stained roof, and sent a notice asking for it to be cleaned or threatening non-renewal. From the air a streaked slope reads as a failing roof whether or not there is a thing wrong with the shingles underneath, and that photo is often the only thing the carrier looked at.
Neighborhood associations send the same kind of note, usually after a drive-through where one dark roof stood out on an otherwise tidy street. Either way the deadline is real. We work those jobs ahead of the date on the letter and send you the before and after photos, so you have something to attach to a reply instead of just saying it got handled.
How long the clean holds depends mostly on shade. A Haughton roof with good sun on most slopes commonly runs four or five years before streaks show again. A house tucked under heavy pine, or one whose north face stays damp most of the day, starts showing growth closer to the three-year mark.
If your shade load is heavy, a zinc strip along the ridge is worth asking about. Rain washes a trace of zinc down the slopes below it and slows new growth from taking hold, which can stretch the gap between cleanings considerably. We will tell you straight whether your roof is a good candidate or whether a normal cleaning interval covers you fine. Call (318) 401-2772 or send us the details.

Roof Cleaning Questions
Do the streaks disappear the day you treat the roof?
Some roofs lighten dramatically within the hour. Others keep clearing over the following week or two as rain carries the dead growth off. That gradual change is the treatment working the safe way rather than a wand scouring the surface bare.
Is the solution going to hurt the shrubs under my eaves?
Not when the prep is done right.
How long does a Haughton roof job take?
Most single-story homes here run an hour to ninety minutes from setup to final rinse.
Will this void my shingle warranty?
No, the opposite. Manufacturers call for low-pressure cleaning and warn against pressure washing specifically. We note the solution strength and pressure rating on your invoice, so the cleaning is documented if a granule-loss claim comes up.
My insurance company sent a letter about my roof. Can you help?
That is a regular call for us in Bossier Parish. We schedule those jobs ahead of the deadline and send before and after photos of every stained slope, so you can attach real evidence to your reply.
Can you clean the metal roof on my newer Haughton house?
Yes. Metal panels get a gentler detergent that lifts mildew film, pollen, and pine tannin without dulling the finish, and we rinse fastener lines downhill so nothing works under a seam.
