Concrete That Reads One Color From the Road
Benton sits north of Bossier City as the parish seat, and the driveways up here are a different animal from what we clean down in town. The newer subdivisions off Highway 3 and the places out toward Cypress Black Bayou were built on big lots, so you get long runs of concrete, a wide apron in front of the garage, and a turnaround that half the family never even uses. All that square footage sits under pine and oak that hangs right over the slab, and the Gulf humidity keeps it damp for most of the year. Concrete in that situation does not stay one color on its own. It goes blotchy in bands, and the bands follow the shade line.
Most of what darkens a Benton driveway is organic. Green and black growth takes hold anywhere the sun never quite reaches by midafternoon, usually the north edge and everything under the canopy. Oak leaves and pine needles that sit through a wet week leave a tannin stain shaped like the pile that made it. Then there is the red clay, tracked in off an unpaved edge, off a neighbor’s lot still under construction, or straight off your tires after a hard rain. Add the tire marks where you back in, rust bleeding out from an irrigation head or a mower left parked in one spot, and the oil shadow where the truck always sits, and one slab is carrying five or six separate problems.
We clean with a flat-surface cleaner rather than a wand, and that one choice is the whole reason the finish comes out even. A surface cleaner rides on the concrete and spins two jets at a fixed height, so every square inch gets the same distance and the same dwell. A wand waved by hand cannot do that. It cuts a bright arc where it lands and leaves a shadow beside it, and on a long Benton drive you end up with zebra striping that catches the eye worse than the dirt did. We save the wand for edges, steps, and the seam along the garage where the machine cannot reach.
Oil is the one stain that pressure by itself will not fix. A cold rinse pushes the surface film around and leaves the rest sitting down in the pores, which is why the spot you hosed off in May is back by June. We put down a degreaser and give it time to dwell so it can lift the oil up out of the concrete, then work it with hot water. Heat thins the oil and lets it release instead of clinging. Fresh drips usually come out entirely. A spot that has been soaking in for years will often lighten to where you stop noticing it, and we will tell you which one you have before we start rather than after.
Three Things Benton Slabs Teach You
Shade growth, oil, and decorative finishes each need a different approach.
Shade Growth and Leaf Tannin
The green and black film along the shaded side of a Benton drive is living growth, so rinsing it only knocks the top off and it comes back. We treat it with a sodium hypochlorite blend that kills it at the root, let that work, then surface clean. Tannin bleeding out of oak leaves and pine needles left sitting lifts in the same pass once the growth underneath is dead.
Oil Needs Heat and a Degreaser
Cold water spreads an oil stain around instead of removing it. We pre-treat with a degreaser, give it real dwell time to pull the oil back out of the pores, then clean with hot water so the oil releases rather than clinging. It is slower than a straight rinse, and it is the only thing that genuinely works on the parking spot and the apron.
Easy Pressure on Stamped Work
A lot of newer Benton builds have a decorative border, a stamped apron, or a colored release coat, and all of that lives in a thin top layer. Too much pressure takes the color and the texture off with the dirt. We drop the pressure, widen the fan, and lean on chemistry and patience instead, so the pattern survives the wash looking like it did new.

Driveway Cleaning Questions
Why does my driveway look striped after I wash it myself?
That is the wand. Held by hand, the tip sits closer to the concrete in some spots than others, so it cuts a bright arc where it lands and leaves a darker shadow right beside it. A flat-surface cleaner holds both jets at a fixed height and overlaps every pass, which is why a professionally cleaned slab reads as one tone from the road instead of a set of stripes.
Will hot water really pull an old oil spot?
Heat helps a great deal. Warm oil thins out and releases from the pores instead of clinging, so hot water paired with a degreaser that has been given real dwell time does far more than a cold rinse ever will. Old spots usually fade a long way. We look at yours first and tell you honestly whether to expect gone or expect faded.
Can you clean stamped or decorative concrete?
Yes, and we clean it differently. Stamped and colored concrete carries its finish in a thin top layer, so we back the pressure down, widen the fan, keep the machine moving, and let the cleaning solution carry the load. Most of the ruined decorative aprons we get called out to look at were damaged by somebody running full pressure on them, so this is worth getting right.
What is the black and green film on the shaded side?
Living growth, fed by the humidity and the shade under your pine and oak. Rinsing takes the top off it and it returns within a month or two. We treat it with a sodium hypochlorite blend that kills it at the root before the surface cleaner ever goes down, so that shaded band stays clean instead of greening back up by fall.
Is sealing worth it on a long Benton driveway?
It is worth it if the drive sits under trees, if you park a work truck on it, or if you have just had it cleaned and want to hold that look. A sealer fills the pores so oil, clay, and rainwater bead up and rinse away instead of soaking in, and on a shaded slab it slows the growth coming back. We apply it on a return visit once the concrete is fully dry.
What happens to my flower beds along the drive?
We pre-wet the plants and beds before we start and rinse them again while we work, which dilutes anything that carries over and keeps the roots from taking it up. Mulch borders and bedding along the concrete get the same treatment, and anything delicate we tarp. Tell us about new plantings when we schedule and we will plan the runoff around them.
How long does a big driveway out here take?
A long Benton drive with a wide apron and a turnaround usually runs most of a morning, longer if there is heavy clay, several oil spots, or a shaded section that needs treatment time before we clean it. Sealing is a separate trip after the slab dries. Call (318) 401-2772 and we will size the job up for you.
